Hey Dorthy, check this out...

I was just reading over some of my last Blogs and I notice that I didn't write anything about the tornado that blew through about 5 months ago. So sorry. I'm the type of person that always wondered why people that live in crazy places and risk life and limb to do so should move, and in the past 10 years Ive lived through a flood and tornado that pretty much changed the layout and look of our small community.

Both disasters rated high on the US event / CNN factor, and the last even ranked a visit from now sitting President George W. Bush. Also something that both have in common is the fact that each have a small somewhat whimsical tale to them from a purely personal perspective.

The first, the great flood of '94 caused by hurricane Alberto dropped 22 inches of rain in a 24 hour period and caused 15 deaths in Americus, about half of the city was underwater and most bridges were washed out that lead into our little town. I was watching the footage on CNN from a hotel room in Texas, we had left just as the sprinkles started and got back from vacation as the town just began the rebuilding process. Luckily none of my family or friends were killed or injured in the flooding, unfortunately I did know most of the people that were killed, some of which were co-workers.

The second catastrophe was from a unnamed tornado that killed 2 and swept away many homes, businesses and our hospital. The twister sat down less than a mile behind our house and skipped over our historic district hitting the medical community and taking out pretty much all our fast food joints and a couple of grocery stores along the way. I was particularly upset when the power went off that night because I happened to be in the middle of a instance in World Of Warcraft, for those of you who don't know, this is very disturbing indeed! As the power went off and the silence grew, the sound and pressure of the tornado was felt by everyone in the house. I was looking out the door when the power lines started falling and popping, green and blue flashes from the lines lite up the darkness as we all huddled in our small bathroom. The day after was really the scariest after we saw what we did miss. The hardest part of the ordeal was not having power or water for a week. I can only imagine what the people in New Orleans went through. On a side note, our hospital is rebuilding, and we have a chance to win a MRI machine for it, if you could please vote at http://www.winanmri.com/ remember to vote for Sumter Regional Hospital.

So, I guess its not practicle for people to just pick up and move because of a flood or tornado or any other natural disaster. But with every ones help, Americus persevered and I'm sure we will grow to be even bigger and better. Thanks for everyone who helped during the disasters, everyone who thought and prayed for us, and everyone who will help us win the MRI by voting online!
